Treatment

Results and Treatment

Testing results are provided with expert interpretation and may be reviewed with our specialists. The consultation will provide thorough understanding and referral to appropriate treatment method. We offer complete support in patient satisfaction and compliancy.

Treatment for the most common disorder, sleep apnea, is continuous positive airway pressure device (CPAP). CPAP is a mask that fits over the nose and/or mouth, and gently blows air into the airway to help keep it open during sleep. The machines are now small and quiet and come equipped with comfort setting for maximum compliancy. This method of treatment is considered the Gold Standard and is highly effective.

Polysomnograms

An overnight sleep study (polysomnogram) is the method used to diagnose sleep disorders. The in- lab sleep study monitors a variety of functions during sleep including sleep stage, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory effort, airflow, and blood oxygen levels. We also offer home sleep studies to certain qualifying patients  with respiratory therapist  instruction and local physician interpretation.

Alternatives

All patients will be advised of the best treatment options for their specific condition. For some diagnosis, other methods of treating sleep apnea include: dental appliances and surgery.

There are also lifestyle changes that are effective ways of mitigating symptoms of sleep apnea, that include:

Weight loss– If you are overweight, this is the most important action you can take. In some cases, weight loss can cure sleep apnea.

Alcohol avoidance– Alcohol consumption makes the upper airway breathing muscles relax  and causes frequent nighttime awakenings.

Smoking Cessation– Causing swelling in the upper airway, cigarette smoking worsens apnea and snoring.

Positional avoidance– Some patients with mild sleep apnea or heavy snoring have fewer breathing problems when they are lying on their sides instead of their back
